🎤 Before the Civil War, the Ohio River separating Kentucky and Indiana was a boundary demarcating slavery to the south and liberty to the north. Black Catholics with Indiana connections played an important—but until now—unknown role in assisting enslaved people seek freedom by escaping north. This session will tell the tale of three conductors on the Underground Railroad through original research and storytelling. We will be challenged to consider the role of faith and struggle in difficult times.

🗣️ Deacon Ned Berghausen is a high school theology teacher and permanent deacon from Louisville. After a period of agnosticism, he rediscovered his Catholic faith through transformative experiences in Bangladesh with the U.S. Peace Corps. He leads the Unmarked Graves project at St. Louis Cemetery, identifying over 1,500 Black Catholics buried without markers since the Civil War. He is married to Dr. Kate Bulinski, a paleontologist, and they have four children, sharing a passion for teaching and exploring the intersection of faith and science.

🎤 Faith often calls us to take risks – stepping into uncertainty, facing doubt, and trusting God’s plan even with the path is unclear. Where do we find the courage to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, even in the midst of storms? Drawing from his work with Exodus 90 and his own experiences of transformation, Jamie will show us how to live for Christ, with freedom, peace, and intentionality.

🗣️ Jamie Baxter lives in Westfield, Indiana with his wife Colleen. They have three young children at home, and a son who has gone before them to God. He studied Philosophy, Catholic Studies, and Classical Languages at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota and Theology at St. Meinrad Archabbey. He began working on Exodus 90 in 2015. Since that time, more than 250,000 men have become Exodus men. Exodus 90 exists to serve men in becoming uncommonly free through practices of prayer, asceticism, and fraternity.

🎤 There are many “tyrants” in our lives as one spiritual writer notes. Time is one of those tyrants, and increasingly in our lives and in our society we can fall prey to doing rather than being. In this presentation, Father Simon will reflect on how we can reclaim rest and leisure with God especially on Sundays to truly make it a Sonday – time spent in intentional relationship with Jesus Christ and his and our brothers and sisters.

🗣️ Fr. Simon Herrmann, OSB, is a solemnly professed Benedictine monk and priest of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. He is the Vocations Director for the monastic community, and he also serves as Director of Young Adult Engagement and Donor Relations. For fun, he enjoys exercising, reading, brewing and drinking coffee before noon, and community building via video games.
